faster than other devices iran is using. the nuclear watchdog says that iran has so far refined 280 kilograms of uranium to a fissile purity of 20%. the iaea reports that 167 kilograms of the uranium could be used to develop nuclear weapons if iran has the technology to enrich it to more than 90% purity. this new assessment is likely to intensify criticism of iran among western nations. representatives of five permanent u.n. security council member nations and germany are due to hold talks with iran next week in kazakhstan concerning its nuclear program. >>> researchers in japan report a significant discovery in the fight against alzheimer's disease. they say they've identified part of the mechanism behind the pathology. the scientists used induced stem cells also known as ips cells that can be programmed to develop into any type of cell. associate professor haruhisa inoue leads the project at kyoto university for cell research and application. his team reprogrammed cells taken from four alzheimer's patients. they turned them into ips cells to produce brain nerve cells. the research

. and that is why it is so important for us to do the report that we did. i will give you a perfect example. you have loan officers at banks being paid bonuses and pay based on how many loans they created. not whether those were good loans. not taking into account whether the loans would later default and caused sick of it and losses. there were a number of different causes of the financial crisis. we tried to bring a lot of transparency to it, to report on that. we are also doing a lot of work in this area to say what has not been dealt with. you are exactly right, fannie and freddie is not dealt with under dodd-frank. but let's talk about dodd-frank for a moment. there have been reforms to our financial system, but there needs to be significantly more. one thing about dodd-frank is it sets up a framework. but ultimately not all of the rules are implemented. there are very important standards that need to be set by the regulators and treasury. because what we are worried about is trying to protect americans in the event of another financial crisis. we do not want to be in a situation where one

republicans will finally allow a vote on the nomination of robert bacharach to the u.s. court of appeals for the tenth circuit. because of this filibuster, something that stopped robert bacharach way last year, a man who came out of the senate judiciary committee unanimously, all democrats, all republicans voting for him, the people of oklahoma, colorado, kansas, new mexico, utah and wyoming have been needlessly denied his services as a tenth circuit judge for seven months. now, the judicial vacancies have again risen to almost 90. we have dozens of judges that get blocked for month after month after month, and then the republicans finally allow a vote on it, it passed with 90 votes or 95 votes or 100 votes, but every time that happens, the federal courts have diminished. every time that's happened, aside from the fact that the people of america wonder what in heaven's name we're doing in this body, anything as foolish as that, but the courts, the federal courts are supposed to be so impartial and outside of politics, they appear to be mixed up in politics. how does anybody, from any of

. >>> good morning everyone i'm ashleigh banfield nice to have you in the newsroom with us, we begin with a story of a 5-year-old alabama boy, a boy named ethan, who woke up in a hospital this morning with his mom and his favorite dinosaur toy. this after a week of being locked away with a ruthless killer in an underground bunker. before a dramatic swat like rescue, in which he saw two grown men shot dead right before his eyes, his bus driver a week before and his captor just yesterday. this is so hard to imagine how a young mind will ever recover from an ordeal like this, earlier on cnn, we heard from alicia, herself a kidnapping victim as a teenager who runs a victim support group. here is her advice. >> you have to try to keep things normal. that's what we have to do for this little boy is keep certain things as normal as possible. >> like what? >> things like just basic routines he had done before. his favorite games, his favorite movies, his favorite food. just try to keep an anchor in the before. and really not equate him with this happening to him. this happened to him.

facing multiple murder charges. molly line has been following the story for us. american hero known as the u.s. military's most lethal sniper and another man both killed at the rough creek lodge roughly 50 miles southwest of fort worth texas, yesterday. texas authorities believe eddie ray ruth of lancaster shot kyle and his close friend chad little field shortly after 3:00 in the afternoon fleeing the lodge area in kyle's stolen pickup truck. he was a dedicated corporal in the marines who had been deployed in iraq in 2007 and served in haiti in 2010. currently listed on reserve duty. a motive for the shooting remains unclear. but ruth apparently suffered from ptsd. according to friends, kyle may have taken him to the range in an effort to help him cope and ruth turned on the two men, shooting them at close range. after the murders, texas authorities say ruth drove to his sister's house and told her and her husband what happened at the gun range. they called law enforcement who went to ruth's home to make an arrest. ruth fled but caught after a short pursuit and automatic handgun rec

the sheriff rick staneck told us he sees firsthand a link between gun violence and mental health. >> this is not about those who are receiving treatment. they're no more violent than anybody else. but untreated, we have a problem. >> reporter: staneck is president obama's ear, using white house meetings to push for more resources to identify and treat the mentally ill and keep dangerous people away from guns. the problem can be seen at jails across the country like this one, where an estimated 25% to 30% of inmates suffer from a mental illness. experts say not all those people belong here. those that do sometimes struggle to get the care they need. 8 of the 9 killers in mass shootings last year had histories of mental illness. few received care and none were blocked from legally purchasing a well because of gaps in the federal background system. >> when we run the background check for you to purchase or acquire a hand gun, if we say it's okay, nothing comes back, you should be good to go. the fact of the matter it's not. it's really become america's dirty little secret about thes

. thank you for joining us. a bomb targeting people shopping for vegetables has once again highlighted pakistan's deep sectarian tension. at least 60 have been killed in an explosion in the southwestern city of quetta. more than 200 were injured when a bomb exploded outside a market. police say it was aimed at the region's minority shia population. attacks in quetta have killed more than 200 in the past month. we have the latest from islamabad. what more do we know about this attack? >> hi, barbara. what we know is that this bomb, which went off in this market was very powerful bomb. it was an improvised explosive device and more than 60 people were killed and well over 200 people were injured. this attack, of course, comes only five weeks after another major attack, pakistan's worst ever sectarian attack in which close to 100 people were also killed in a similar bombing. the people targeted in that attack and this attack are the same. they are ethnic minorities from the hazara tribe. they are shia mino
